Christmas is one of our most popular holidays. For some, it is the centerpiece of their religious experience. For others, it is a great time to party. As a result, our cultural discussions sea-saw between the extremes of “Merry Christmas” and “Happy Holidays.” It probably won’t end the discussion but taking time to examine the origins of the modern American Christmas may help us to understand why we celebrate the way we do.
