The Doctrine of Christian Discovery: Legacy of Conquest

“In fourteen hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” We all know the song (or parts of it anyway), but the consequence of “title by discovery” was quietly adopted in a little-known Supreme Court case in 1823, Johnson v. M’Intosh. Since that time, religious organization such as the Unitarian Universalist Association have called for a study of the doctrine and the elimination of its reference. Is that enough?
