This Memorial Day weekend also marks the 100th anniversary of the American Battle Monuments Commission. The ABMC was established after World War I to oversee the consolidated burial grounds in Europe for the thousands of American soldiers who died in this “war to end all wars” and, two decades later, the cemeteries created after World War II. Today nearly 124,000 American war dead are interred in these cemeteries located around the world. Our service includes the century-long story of one family, two wars, two cemeteries, and the last American soldier buried overseas this past summer by the ABMC.
