About Social Justice
“The challenge of social justice is to evoke a sense of community that we need to make our nation a better place, just as we make it a safer place.
It’s a time for greatness–not for greed. It’s a time for idealism — not ideology. It is a time not just for compassionate words, but compassionate action.”
-Marian Wright Edelman,
President, Children’s Defense Fund
The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Bozeman (UUFB) believes strongly in supporting our community, and world, and putting our faith into action. The UUFB’s Social Justice Action Committee (SJAC) provides the congregation with opportunities to participate in and witness social justice activities; educate ourselves about social justice issues; participate in social justice initiatives through groups, petitions, campaigns, and fundraising; and gather to voice our concerns on current global and local issues of social justice. We welcome you to join us! SJAC meets at 6:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month to identify recipients of Second and Fifth Sunday Offerings, potential speakers, and other social justice opportunities to present to the fellowship.
UUFB donates the offering collected during the Service on the second Sunday of each month to an organization that is doing social justice work related to our values and mission. UUFB donates the offering collected on the fifth Sunday of certain months to an organization that supports disaster relief. Recipient organizations are designated by SJAC and may be local, national, or international in scope. In 2023, our donations through this program totaled $20,189. If you have a recommendation for a future recipient of our Second Sunday Offering, please let us know! To see our guidelines for special offering speakers, click here.
SJAC also supports the following groups through ongoing volunteer and membership commitments:
