Family Promise
Family Promise Mission Statement: “We empower families experiencing housing insecurities to secure a safe, affordable home, a livelihood, and the chance to build a better future for their children.”
Since 2006, Family Promise of Gallatin Valley (FPGV), the local chapter of a national organization, has been working with a large base of local volunteers to provide shelter, meals, training, and many other necessities to bring lasting solutions to families in need. They empower homeless families with children to achieve self-sufficiency through partnerships, services, and advocacy. UUFB was an early member of Family Promise of Gallatin Valley organization and reaffirmed its commitment to the program in 2015.
How does UUFB help?
In the early years of Family Promise, families stayed in churches, moving each week to a new church. UUFB volunteers helped families move and provided meals 5 weeks a year.
When the pandemic resulted in closing routine operations in 2020, FPGV moved to a static model of housing using Roxy’s House (formerly the Rectory), donated by St. James Episcopal Church. But more housing was needed.
In 2023, Family Promise acquired the A Journey Home campus whose buildings provide space for emergency and transitional housing for families. Families first stay in the emergency shelter and then move to transitional housing before moving into the community. Families now have their own space and the ability to prepare meals for themselves, so UUFB’s volunteer role has changed.
UUFB and you can now help in three ways:
- Providing personal hygiene and cleaning supplies for families living at A Journey Home. Lists of needed supplies are shared on our listserv. They can be dropped off at UUFB and transported weekly to Family Promise.
- Volunteering for short or long-term tasks, such as providing transportation, helping in the Rising Stars daycare kitchen, helping remodel the buildings at the A Journey Home campus, etc. A list of volunteer opportunities can be found by clicking here.
