We are surrounded by and immersed in diversity. The number of different life forms on our planet is beyond count. The variations within the human species, in areas such as skin color, physical size, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, culture and beliefs are as numerous as the people alive at any given moment. Some scientists claim that diversity is both beneficial and essential to sustaining life as we know it. And yet when it comes to humans, diversity often seems to be accompanied by division. We will consider diversity and division that can occur within an individual person as well as between groups of people in an attempt to understand and lessen the division that separates us.
